Covid - there were a couple of days where we were all in the whisper of
a very dark place. Lockdown was such an unnatural human limitation and we
thought we would never get past it. But as everything else, this too passed.
The minute the lockdown was lifted and we were allowed to travel,
we headed for our favourite "second home town" Jeffrey's Bay
This time round we opted to support an overnight destination
along the way. A lovely little Karro establishment 1/2 way
between Pretoria & JBay.
Any place you need to reach by dirt road is worth a visit.
And when there is a windmill on the property, so much better.
Dirt roads and windmills, two of my favourite things.
JBay in Covid not a single soul on the beach.
What was once a very crowded familiy beach was now earie deserted.
The only sign of any life on the beach was the resident seagulls.
But, heck, if you can't be on the beach, well then you find other things to do.
The surrounding area has plenty to offer.
Our first visit was to the Mooihoek Strawberry Farm in Hankey.
JBay itself has some interresting activities right in town and lazer putt-putt seemed to be very popular amongst the young crowd - but regardless of age we all have an inner child screaming to get out.
The interesting wall art at our favourite little beach front restuarant Tasty Table.
Another awesome little beach front restaurant is Kitchen Windows. The wooden bench on their lawn adjacent to the beach is a great place to spend time admiring the beautiful view.
A little distance ouside of JBay is the Tsitsikama Village and Marilyn's 60's Diner
is a favourtie stopover for true diner yumminess.
In search of a secluded "unseen" swimming spot, we headed for the
Tsitsikama Nature Reserve. The swing bridges are alwasy spectacular.
And find a spot to swim.........we will.
The kids convinced me to tick off one item on my bucket list,
a lilo avendture up the river mouth.
One of my all time favourite and memorible shops in JBay is the
little Shell Shop. Bring's back memories of years ago when this was
one of the few shops in the little town
JBay has no shortage of little street cafe's and shops and the
Donut World is another favourite of ours.
The beaches were not open to the public, so no wave or body surfing,
but the water park provided ample entertainment and adventure.
There are plenty of hidden coffee or cocktail gems around town and
Nina's is an icon restaurant in JBay
Kabeljauws Hiking Trail is an amazing little trail, safe, close by and provides
a varienty of river, sand, bush and sea.
And the bonus is that there are no law enforcement official on this stretch of beach.
On route to the Baviaans, just a little way past Hankey you find
Padlangs Road Stall and Restaurant.
Love stopping here and browsing the nick nacks on offer.
It was Covid, it was semi-lockdown, it was Christmas and dispite the strange times
we were finding ourselves in the spirit of Christmas
was still very evident in all forms and sizes.
Covid had no effect on the most beautiful sunsets that we have become
acccustomed to in JBay and the best place to observe this is no
doubt from the deck at Supertubes.
